Stuff I Don’t Need
I left the TV on today, because I needed some background noise while I was working. At one point, “How I Met Your Mother” came on, and one of the characters said something about cleaning out his place and about how he made a box labeled something like “stuff I don’t need any more.” It made me look around my own place and realize I should do the same thing.
I have a remarkable amount of useless, old computer gear. As much as I might like to have an office like this guy…

…or a collection of gear to rival this guy…
… I really think I need less clutter in my life. Why did I save all this stuff? Did I really think that I was going to run NextStep 3.3 or BeOS 4.5 again some day? Even under virtualization, what’s the point? What can you do in 2009 with an SGI O2 running IRIX 6.5 besides boot it up, play with it for 5 minutes, think to yourself “Oh yeah, that’s right, this thing looks cool but is slow and useless,” and turn it back off?
Why can’t I remember that my time has value?
